So, for whatever reason, I've been watching some of the episodes of the ABC Family series, "Secret Life of an American Girl." It's alright, but it's blatantly one sided, as provided by the title of the show. I have some thoughts on it, and am going to share them with whomever reads this now....
I realize that the boys/men of our society are viewed as the power players, it's been that way since the foundation for this country was laid, and even before that--Native American culture before that. However, when that view of men is projected out over the entire society there are a lot of things that become overlooked, and sneered at in disbelief. I'm here to tell you that I, an American male, am not a power player. I never have been, never will be, I'm sure. I have problems that get overlooked just because I am a man, and it's rediculous. Just because I have a penis and testicles does not mean that I'm incapable of feeling heartache, dealing with depression, thoughts of suicide, thoughts of substance abuse... it doesn't make sense. Nothing against women, but as you watch tv all you see/hear is how hard it is to be a woman. Again, I'm not against women, I'm very much a fan, however the overcompensation is a bit much in my eyes. I'll explain....
Yes, there are problems that girls/women have that men can never understand, we feel the brunt of it on the back end, second had if you will. However, being a man doesn't make me exempt from having "feminine problems," or problems that society deems girly. There are things in my past that you never hear broad spectrum in America... It shouldn't be that way. We are all human, and we all deal with problems. I guess this is some sort of stand for Men's rights... I'm not looking for arguments, or anything along that line. Merely stating, that girls aren't the only ones who have to deal with things... Some guys, like me, who actually care, deal with a lot of crap too. I can tell you stories that would probably make you cringe... hit me up, we'll chat.... Maybe it'll be good for both of us.
I guess, what I'm trying to say is this: The next time you're watching the television, listening to the radio, or reading the newspaper and you see that a women in our society was abused by her husband, having problems with substance abuse, committed suicide, or whatever the problem is... there are guys out there who are dealing with the same things. Abuse, emotional swings, whatever... it's a reality across the board... Keep that in mind...
We're all human, let's act like it!
Peace and Love,
Andy J. Graves
